This is the final in a series of profiles of researchers who were awarded a 2025 Lasallian Research Grant by the Lasallian Region of North America (RELAN).
Brother Robert Schieler, FSC, is an independent researcher and the director of the Brothers’ community at Anselm Hall at La Salle University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Brother Bob served as Superior General of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools from 2014 to 2022.
With his Lasallian research grant, Brother Bob will write a book titled “Pathway to New Horizons,” which he anticipates will be published in fall 2026.
“This project was inspired by my ministry experience in the Philippines in three different periods between 1975 and 1991,” Brother Bob said. “While there was political turmoil in the country during those years, the local Brothers and the Philippine District emerged as leaders in the global Lasallian mission and the Philippine educational scene.”
“The research hopes to shed light on a religious institute transitioning its Brothers’ mission to one shared with the laity as Partners in that mission; the transitioning of a new District (Philippines) emerging with indigenous leadership; the transitioning of a nation (the Philippines) from a period of martial law and revolution to a return to democracy; and, a personal transition of one Brother maturing in his own vocation as a Brother of the Christian Schools in a culture not his own,” Brother Bob explained.
