On Sunday, February 5, Archbishop Jerome Hanus, OSB, celebrated the 175th anniversary of the Archdiocese of Dubuque with a prayer service for “World Day for Consecrated Life.” Of the men and women from religious communities in the archdiocese, approximately 450 attended the prayer at the Church of the Resurrection in Dubuque. The centerpiece of the service was the presentation of Distinguished Service Awards. Archbishop Hanus presented the awards to 16 religious for service to the archdiocese. Among the recipients was Brother Stephen Markham, who was recognized for his years of service “in the schools and the parishes, serving as pastoral associate and as a parish life coordinator for the St. LaSalle Pastorate.” The next week Archbishop Hanus wrote to tell Brother Stephen that the original plan was to present all the recipients with the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice cross, the highest papal honor given the lay Catholics. The insignias and diplomas arrived after the archdiocesan event and will be sent to the women and men religious. Congratulations, Brother Stephen!
