Shae Hughes, a senior at De La Salle High School in Concord, CA, was named Contra Costa County’s Martin Luther King Jr. Student Humanitarian of the Year for 2010.
Shae, a 2010 graduate, volunteers at Monument Crisis Center in Concord and at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, tutors younger students at De Marillac Academy in San Francisco’s Tenderloin District, and is a member of the Student Coalition on Respectful Education (S.C.O.R.E.) at De La Salle.
“I volunteer for several reasons,” said Shae. “I feel that, having time, abilities, and material well-being, it’s my responsibility to use a portion of those to help my community in need. I would feel selfish if I only used those things for my own life. I also find it’s a great way to refine my character, which I am always seeking to do.”
Shae will attend Northeastern University in Boston, MA in the fall.
