Lasallian Youth Unite Across Region

More than 420 Lasallian Youth from schools all across the Region gathered in their Districts this summer to put their faith into practice through service projects, prayer, presentations, and other activities. Each District held assemblies that were focused on a chosen theme, engaging all participants by working together.

DENA, LYAThe District of Eastern North America (DENA) had more than 100 students and educators gather at the 19th annual Lasallian Youth Assembly on July 14-19, 2013, at Manhattan College in Riverdale, NY. The theme of the assembly was “Caring for God’s Creation.” Students volunteered at different areas that were affected by Super Storm Sandy, and participated in the Stars of Hope Project, which invites volunteers to craft messages of hope and encouragement to those affected by disasters, with wooden star creations, placed throughout the community.

San Francisco and New Orleans-Santa Fe, LSLRepresenting schools from the Districts of San Francisco and New Orleans-Santa Fe, 175 students and 38 moderators gathered for the 10th annual Lasallian Student Leaders (LSL) held at Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, CA, from July 14-19, 2013. Participants spent the week focusing on the Five Core Principles of a Lasallian School: faith in the presence of God, concern for the poor and social justice, inclusive community, quality education, and respect for all persons. Students used technology to pray over Skype with other Lasallians from DENA, Centre Notre Dame de la Rouge in Quebec, and Montreal, Canada, which connected them to members of their larger Lasallian Family.

The Lasallian Youth Assembly held its 12th annual gathering June 16-21, 2013, at Holy Names University, Oakland, CA, with 87 students from the San Francisco District exploring the theme “Building Hope Together.” Participants partook in various service projects throughout the city, including the group service project that was done at Alameda Food Bank helping feed local families.

Midwest, Lasallian YouthThe Midwest District Lasallian Youth congregated at Christian Brothers University, Memphis, TN, June 23-28, 2013, to focus on the Lasallian pillars of faith, service, and community through the theme “The Work Is Yours.” A total of 85 students participated in activities that examined racial and social injustice specifically during the Civil Rights Movement, including a trip to the National Civil Rights Museum and servicing the poor through volunteering.
