The first meeting of the Institute Committee for Lasallian Vocations was held May 16-20 at the Generalate in Rome. The committee, called for by the Superior General and the acts of the 45th General Chapter, was tasked with strengthening coordination and collaborative efforts in the pastoral ministry of vocation across the Institute, especially in fostering a culture of vocations.
Ten participants comprised the committee: one representative from each of the five Regions of the Institute (Bro. Eder Polido, FSC – RELAL; Bro. Rey Mejias, FSC – PARC; Bro. José Manuel Sauras, FSC – RELAF; Jacques Vincent Le Dréaut – RELEM; Chris Swain – RELAN) two members of the Secretariat for Formation (Bro. Jesús Rubio, FSC; Bro. Joseph Felix, FSC), the General Councilor for Lasallian Family and Vocations (Bro. Rafael Matas, FSC), as well as a Guadalupana De La Salle Sister (Sr. Juana Torres) and a representative of the Signum Fidei movement (Chiara Nardelli).
“Our time together was life-giving, hope-filled and future focused,” said Chris Swain, Regional coordinator for Lasallian vocation ministry. “Within the Institute there is much diversity and many challenges, yet the unity and prevailing spirit of faith, as well as a practical eye towards what is possible enriched our time together.”
During their meetings the committee focused on four primary areas: strengthening communication efforts, formation of those involved in the pastoral ministry of vocations, collaboration and networking, and development of a clearinghouse and resource center focused on vocation ministry.

“It is clear our group deeply believes the need for the Institute continues to be great in our world and the Lasallian vocation, in its diversity of expressions, is a vocation for today,” said Swain.
They met with Bro. Robert Schieler, FSC, to dialogue about the hopes and challenges of the pastoral ministry of vocations, as well as hear Bro. Robert’s call for new models and approaches for vocation ministry. The group also met with Ilaria Iadeluca, who was recently hired at the Generalate in the area of social media and communications, Bro. Paulo Dullius, FSC, who works in formation, and Antoine Béland, who is the Institute coordinator for Young Lasallians.
Committee members developed a working document for their shared work ahead, as well as specific projects for the next calendar year. The projects include strengthening communication through review and revision of Institute web content on Lasallian vocations, as well as the development of a quarterly Institute newsletter on the pastoral ministry of vocations, both meant to inspire and provide practical resources to foster a culture of vocations. Another project includes the development of a clearinghouse meant to foster reflection, resource sharing, and creation of new materials to engage all members of our Lasallian Family in “awakening vocations in the Church.”
