Lasallians enjoy a welcome reception to kick off the pre-conference advancement track.

One day before the official opening of the 43rd annual Huether Lasallian Conference in Chicago, advancement professionals from Lasallian ministries gathered for a pre-conference session.

The session began on the evening of Wednesday, November 16 with a welcome reception for participants. The reception, sponsored by Lipman Hearne, provided the chance for Lasallians from 27 ministries to meet and start building community. The crowd includes Lasallians who are seasoned in their roles and others who are new to the mission.

Reynaldo Dumas, who has been serving at San Miguel School in Chicago for six months as the development manager, enjoyed the opportunity to network with fellow Lasallians.

“One of the cool things about Lasallians is basically everybody is very aware of having the same mission,” said Dumas. “And because of that we’re able to really come together and really explore the attitude of just trying to make things better for each other as opposed to working in competition with each other.”

Chaired by Steve Crisman, senior vice president for advancement at Christian Brothers University (CBU) in Memphis, Tennessee, the pre-conference advancement track features eight breakout sessions and three plenary sessions beginning Wednesday night and continuing all day Thursday. Thursday’s sessions include topics such as the basics about fundraising, steps to having a successful annual campaign, phonathons, planned giving and more.

Patti Callahan, who has served as director of advancement at Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse, New York, for 15 years, hopes to maintain the relationships she is building at this event and is looking forward to learning about what other Lasallians are doing.

“There’s always something new out there,” said Callahan. “Things keep evolving in the development profession and in dealing with alumni, in dealing with volunteers. We have our challenges … so trying to learn from what others have done. And I think the conversations and the questions and answers are going to be as valuable as the speakers.”

Dick Gadomski, CBU alumnus and longtime CBU donor, is the principal underwriter of the pre-conference session. Following the pre-conference session, advancement topics are included in Friday’s breakout sessions at the full Huether Conference.

Huether is taking place for the third consecutive year at the Holiday Inn Chicago Mart Plaza River North. Huether, hosted by Christian Brothers Conference, is an opportunity for educators to not only learn new techniques and find inspiration, it also allows them to interact, share best practices, and grow more deeply committed to their vocation of providing students with transformative, holistic experiences.
