Postulants Armando Carvalho, Javier Hansen and Joseph Wright from the District of San Francisco New Orleans (SFNO) spent time in prayer and reflection August 6 – 10, 2014, at Saint Anthony’s Retreat in Three Rivers, California.

After a busy school year and summer of teaching, the retreat was a time for them to transition into their second year of postulancy. The postulants were joined by Brother James Joost, FSC, Director of Formation for the SFNO District, and Brother Kevin Slate, FSC, Director of Novices for the Regional Novitiate. The three-day retreat included reflection on Gospel passages and relating them to the transition they are experiencing in their own lives. On the second day, the group ventured up the side of a mountain to gain perspective from the giant forest of Sequoia National Park and vista of the Sierra Nevada from Moro Rock.

All three postulants will begin this school year at the Regional Postulancy, Jeremy House in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, joining other postulants and Brothers from across the Region. During his second year, Brother Joseph will teach full-time at La Salle College High School in Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania. Brothers Armando and Javier taught full-time last year at Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory in San Francisco, California, and this year they will take courses at La Salle University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and volunteer at La Salle College High School and West Catholic Preparatory High School in Philadelphia.

Through their programs of study and their experience of faith, educational ministry and community living, the postulants will discern their decision, with the help of the Brothers, to continue into a third year of postulancy or request readiness for the novitiate.
