Brother Gary Eugene Smith died on December 24, 2011. Visitation will be held at Roncalli High School on Thursday, December 29, 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm with a prayer service at 7:00 pm. On Friday, December 30, visitation will be at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 14th & Waldo in Manitowoc from 9:30 am – 11:00 am with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am. Fr. Daniel Felton will preside. A luncheon will follow at noon. Interment will be on January 3, Tuesday, at Resurrection Cemetery in Romeoville, IL, following a prayer service at 11:00 am in the cemetery chapel. Memorials may be sent to Roncalli H.S. Student Scholarship Program, the Roncalli Music Department Piano Fund, Our Lady of Victory Missionary Sisters, or to the De La Salle Christian Brothers Vocation Fund, 7650 S. County Line Rd., Burr Ridge, IL 60527.
A De La Salle Christian Brother for 26 years, Bro. Gary was born in Union City, PA, the youngest son of the late Harold E. and Martha E. Smith. He served as a religious catechist, teacher, and administrator in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota, Minnesota, and in Bethlehem, Palestine. His final assignment was the last 14 years at Roncalli Catholic High School in Manitowoc, WI. Brother Gary earned a BA from Siena Heights University and Masters degrees from Loyola University and the University of St. Thomas. Teaching was his great love, especially teaching Scripture.
