1817

Brothers Antonin, Aubin and Fulgence, the first De La Salle Brothers to come to North America, arrived in Annapolis, Maryland.

1819

The Brothers established a school in St. Genevieve, Missouri, which operated until 1822.

1837

Brother Aidant and three other Brothers arrived in Montreal from France and established the first permanent foundation of the Institute in North America.

1842

John McMullin of Baltimore entered the Montreal Novitiate and took the name Francis to become the first American De La Salle Brother.

1845

Brother Francis opened Calvert Hall in Baltimore, the first permanent Lasallian school in the United States (now Calvert Hall College High School).

1882

Christian Brothers Winery started operations.

1900

Thirteen leading U.S. Brothers were exiled for defending the teaching of Latin.

1900

John Baptist de La Salle was canonized.

1943

St. Mary’s College Press was founded. Its first publication was a religion textbook series entitled Living With Christ.

1950

Pope Pius XII proclaimed St. John Baptist de La Salle the patron of all teachers of youth.

1962

Sangre de Cristo Center opened as second novitiate for U.S. Brothers.

1965

Christian Brothers Services was licensed. (It was incorporated in 1985.)

1966

At the 39th General Chapter of the Institute, Brother Charles Henry Buttimer was the first American to be elected Superior General.

1967

Brother Benilde Romançon, an influential French Christian Brother (1805-1862), became the first canonized De La Salle Christian Brother.

1968

The first Regional Chapter was held in Lockport, Illinois.

1973

Bethlehem University was established as the first Catholic university in the Holy Land.

1978

The Toronto District joined the U.S. Districts to create the United States-Toronto Region.

1981

Christian Brothers Investment Services was (CBIS) founded.

1984

The first Regional Convocation of U.S. Brothers was held.

1966

At the 41st General Chapter of the Institute, Brother John Johnston was the second American to be elected Superior General.

1992

Lasallian Volunteers became a national (U.S.) program.

1995

The Regional twinning program was officially established with the future Lwanga District in Africa.

2005

The first USAT Regional Assembly, consisting of 95% lay partners and 5% Brothers, convened in Salt Lake City, Utah.

2011

The USAT Region adopted the Lasallian Education Brand, uniting schools and ministries to collectively tell the Lasallian story.

2011

The Lasallian Education Council was created, making the USAT Region the first to implement an innovative structure as proposed by the International Assembly and adopted by the 44th General Chapter to move the Lasallian Mission forward.

2011

SEL (Lasallian Educational Services) or “salt” was created to bring together the various youth ministries in the District of Francophone Canada.

2012

The Regions of the USAT and the Francophone Canada united as the Région Lasallienne de l’Amérique du Nord/Lasallian Region of North America (RELAN).

2014

At the 45th General Chapter of the Institute, Brother Robert Schieler was third American to be elected Superior General.
