Dr. Tricia Bruce Appointed Consultant to General Secretariat of Synod

Dr. Tricia Bruce, director of Springtide Research Institute, is one of six new consultants appointed to the General Secretariat of the Synod.

On February 17, the Vatican announced the second assembly of the Synod of Bishops on synodality will meet October 2–27, 2024, and will be preceded by a retreat for members September 30 – October 1.

In a “chirograph,” or brief papal document, Pope Francis stated that study groups will be established for in-depth study of some themes that emerged during the first session of the synod. The study groups will be coordinated by the dicasteries of the Roman Curia and the General Secretariat of the Synod.

In response to her appointment, Dr. Bruce told the Lasallian Region of North America (RELAN), “I approach my appointment as a sociologist trained to listen deeply to identify patterns, commonalities, differences and directions. Having devoted my career to understanding the overlay of identity, organization and social change in religion – especially U.S. Catholicism – I am honored to serve the global Church in this capacity.

“As director of Springtide Research Institute, I’ll bring a particular attentiveness to the perspectives and experiences of young people, rooted in Lasallian expressions of faith and zeal in community. I’m humbled by the opportunity and both inspired and compelled to carry forward the important work already underway through this multiyear synodal journey.”

When asked what her work as consultant might entail, Dr. Bruce stated that she would likely be working alongside others to “collaboratively to hear, amplify and synthesize the diverse array of voices included in the synod proceedings to date. The General Secretariat is designed as a connecting entity, meant to serve through collegiality, communion and guidance.”
