Nine west coast Lasallian schools gathered at Saint Mary’s College of California in Moraga for the inaugural Bay Area Lasallian Symposium on January 27, 2017. The day-long event was created by a group of leaders inspired by their experience of the Brother John Johnston Institute for Contemporary Lasallian Practice.
The Johnston Institute, a program of the Office for Lasallian Education at by Christian Brothers Conference, is a two-year Regional formation program that focuses on deepening participants’ understanding of De La Salle’s story and vision, Lasallian pedagogy, the Lasallian promotion of justice and Lasallian spirituality while utilizing contemporary texts to inform and influence current and future Lasallian practice.

Reflecting on the event, planning committee member John Gumina said, “(We) could not be more proud of the outcomes of our capstone project. The two and a half years we spent together in the Brother John Johnston Institute created a lasting bond between us that truly gave life St. La Salle’s philosophy of ‘together and by association.’”
Participants were able to choose two of 31 available learning labs, which were presentations given by members of the community in their area of expertise with a general focus on contemporary Lasallian practices. The labs were followed by Mass and an opportunity to gather by department to share successes and challenges. The day ended with a social.
The schools, all from California, represented at the gathering included Christian Brothers High School, Sacramento; De Marillac Academy, San Francisco; De La Salle Academy, Concord; De La Salle High School, Concord; Justin-Siena High School, Napa; Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory, San Francisco; Saint Mary’s College of California, Moraga; and Saint Mary’s College High School, Berkeley.
