Manhattan College in Riverdale, New York, has changed its name to Manhattan University, effective August 21, 2024. According to the university’s news release, the name change better recognizes the more than 100 academic pathways the institution offers, while appealing to a more globally diverse student body.
The change is “a natural evolution in our long history in New York City” and “signifies our commitment to academic excellence and rigor, and showcases the myriad majors and minors that we offer our students in preparation for career-ready opportunities or further advanced academic studies,” University President Milo Riverso, Ph.D., stated in the release. Riverso spoke to the university’s hopes to market more widely to international students and diverse student populations.
In 2022, the school conducted a survey on a potential name change and more than 75% of 3,000 students, faculty, staff, administrators, board of trustee members and alumni approved “university.”
