The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Rico McCoy, a 2005 graduate of St. John’s College High School in Washington, D.C., as a free agent.

While at St. John’s, McCoy was a two-way starter; he played linebacker and running back his junior and senior years. Among awards he received in his high school career, McCoy was named to the 2004 Riddell All-American first team. In 2004, he was also named an All-Metropolitan player and Gatorade Player of the Year for District of Columbia.

After St. John’s, McCoy attended the University of Tennessee where he led in tackles with 119 last season. He was a three-year starter on defense where he totaled 350 tackles with 2.5 sacks, 14 tackles for a loss, one interception, 13 passes broken up and eight forced fumbles.

A post on the Buccaneers website calls McCoy “another good fit for Tampa Bay’s defensive scheme.”
