Twinning: Education, Fundraising Underway

Lasallian schools in the United States and the Lwanga District in Africa are continuing their efforts this Lenten season to enhance their twinning relationships by learning more about each other and coming together in prayer.

Brother Getachew Alemayehu, FSC, former headmaster at Bisrate Gabriel in Dire Dawa, Ethiopia, who is studying at Christian Brothers University in Memphis, TN, recently spent three days at Archbishop O’Hara High School in Kansas City, MO. O’Hara and Bisrate Gabriel are twinned together. Bro. Getachew explained to the students how their donations are used and discussed the cultural and economic realities that make twinning necessary. He also said that twinning sets an example to make his students more generous to people, such as the street children, in their community. O’Hara students also held fundraisers for Bisrate and brought in more than $500.

Many schools in the U.S. have fundraisers underway to support their twin schools. Students at La Salle High School in Pasadena, CA, put on a presentation at the end of their Ash Wednesday service to educate fellow classmates about Mount La Salle College and launch a fundraising drive. Calvert Hall College High School in Baltimore, MD, and Christian Brothers High School in Memphis, TN, are two other schools with fundraisers currently underway.

The student council at De Marillac Academy in San Francisco, CA, organized a fundraiser called the Cha-Ching Challenge to raise money for Child Discovery Centre. In order to raise extra money, fifth graders are writing essays to try to persuade a stranger to donate to their twin school. As teacher and Lasallian Volunteer (LV) Liana Vantrease describes on the LV blog, she will send the essays to foundations in an attempt to get donations.

“While this project has been extremely rewarding so far simply because we are helping people in need, it has been particularly special to do a project like this with these students,” Vantrease wrote. “Even though they have so little, they want to give so much.”

While many schools take up collections and host fundraisers during Lent, some conduct fundraisers at various times through the school year, like St. Raymond High School for Boys in Bronx, NY, which collected $948 during a Thanksgiving fundraiser.
