Two Books by Brother Terence McLaughlin Are Now Available

“Silent Acceptance” and “Blessed to Teach,” two books by Brother Terence McLaughlin, FSC, have been republished and are now available for purchase. A leader and trailblazer, Midwest Brother Terence, who died May 25, served for more than 55 years in Lasallian schools.

While president of the then-combined Christian Brothers High School and Christian Brothers College (now University) in Memphis, Tennessee, Brother Terence made history by racially integrating Christian Brothers High School years before any other all-white high school in Memphis. “Silent Acceptance” is a memoir that recalls the events that began the racial integration of high schools in Memphis, beginning with Jesse Turner’s registration in September 1962.

Written for Lasallian educators, “Blessed to Teach” examines five themes: classroom climate, school culture, metaphors, ethical climate, and the Lasallian school “then and now.” In the introduction, Brother Terence writes that the book “furnishes many possibilities for teachers. It may be a personal reflection, a change agent for the classroom, a stimulus for a faculty meeting discussion, or a topic for a teacher workshop. Whatever, it is meant to remind us that what we are doing is special. It is a calling.”
