Lasallian Saints Art Contest 2025

Winning pieces of the “Seeing With Eyes of Faith: Celebrating Our Lasallian Saints and Heroes” art contest were on display at the Huether Lasallian Conference in St. Louis, Missouri.

As part of the Year of Lasallian Spirituality, students and educators in ministries across the Region were invited to choose a person or group of people who they identify as a Lasallian hero (or heroine) and render an image of them to help us to celebrate those who have been living examples of the Lasallian charism through art. The individual could be a blessed or saint, like Saint John Baptist de La Salle, or someone living and working in the Lasallian family today. See the full contest guidelines.

Featured below are all art contest submissions, as well as statements by the winning artists.

Drawing and Painting

1st Place, Middle School Level

“A Light That Illuminates Others”
Jose S., Grade 7

San Miguel School of Providence, Rhode Island
Faculty Advisor: Kim Martel

Artist’s Statement:
“Brother Lawrence has influenced many. He started the San Miguel community, a group of schools that shine like stars. When I decided to draw him, I wanted to draw him as an image of hope, influence and eternal kindness. His smile is bright and when I first met him, I listened to stories about previous Miguel Men whose strong spirits guide us to success. He is an inspiration to everybody in our school, but not just our San Miguel school but all of the other San Miguel schools, too. He is like the moon, when he appears all of us stars can shine brighter than ever. I wanted to draw a picture of not just any man but a man who started a great future for all who can experience his vision. This is not a vision of just any dream, but of a dream that he made come true.”

2nd Place, Middle School Level

“Portrait of Someone Who is Lasallian”
Cecilia E., Grade 7

Christian Brothers Academy, Syracuse, New York
Faculty Advisor: Bobbi Petrocci

Artist’s Statement:
“My amazing English teacher, Mrs. Marshfield, is very friendly, only strict when she needs to be, loves talking about reading and shared interests, yet always keeps the class on track, and is never afraid to share her unique, fun, incredible personality with the world. She encourages creativity when much of the modern world discourages it. She always pushes us to try new things and explore our interests, while being understanding if it is not someone’s interest.”

1st Place, High School Level

“Br. Michael McKenery, FSC”
Madison L., Grade 12

La Salle Academy, Providence, Rhode Island
Faculty Advisor: Daniela Coutcher

Artist’s Statement:
“Br. Michael McKenery was La Salle Academy graduate (‘57), and later went on to become a Lasallian Brother. In his time and work here, his vision and leadership changed the school and community for the better in so many ways. His devotion to the arts was undeniable, with the arts center at my high school bearing his name, the reason I chose Br. Michael, for it is through his innovation that I have been able to grow as an artist and whole person at La Salle.”

2nd Place, High School Level

“St. Jerome”
Nadia C., Grade 11

Mullen High School, Denver, Colorado
Faculty Advisor: Tom Brotherson

Artist’s Statement:
“I chose to paint Saint Jerome for this Catholic art competition because I find his love for writing really inspiring. He didn’t just write for the sake of it — he used his passion to serve his faith by translating the Bible into Latin, which became a huge part of Church history. What stood out to me was how meaningful writing was to him and how he turned that into something spiritual. I relate to that because I also find a lot of meaning in creative work.”

1st Place, Higher Education/Faculty Level

“The Gentle Chemist”
Kasey Neiderlander, Graduate Student

Central Catholic High School, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Artist’s Statement:
“Brother Eric Henderson dedicated his life to teaching chemistry as a Christian Brother in the Lasallian schools. He exemplified the definition of the word charism. With a heart as big as his love for science, he approached every day with patience, compassion, and unwavering belief in the goodness of others. His gentle wisdom and selfless dedication made him more than just a teacher, he was a loving friend and a saint walking this earth, touching lives and leaving a legacy of inspiration and hope.”

2nd Place, High School Level

“St. John Baptist de La Salle”
Dimarco C., Grade 11

Totino-Grace High School, Fridley, Minnesota
Faculty Advisor: Cheri Broadhead

Artist’s Statement:
“I chose to make a collage of St. John Baptist De La Salle because of his profound impact on my education and so many other people’s. He is a very important figure at our school as he is the patron saint of teachers of youth. Without his educational reform, our school system would look fundamentally different.”

1st Place, High School Level

“Blessed Scubilion Rousseau”
Matissa C., Grade 10

Totino-Grace High School, Fridley, Minnesota
Faculty Advisor: Arturo Cruz

Artist’s Statement:
“Blessed Scubilion Rousseau was born in Annay la-Côte, France, and lived from 1797-1867. In his native village he served as a catechist, a teacher of principles in the Christian religion. This is what inspired me to put the book at the bottom of my clay medallion. It represents his teachings and how the principles he taught affected others. After serving in France for 10 years he left for the island of Reunion where he dedicated the rest of his life to teaching and caring.”

2nd Place, High School Level

“Teodoreto Garberoglio”
Quynh N., Grade 10

Totino-Grace High School, Fridley, Minnesotaota
Faculty Advisor: Arturo Cruz

Artist’s Statement:
“Teodoreto Garberoglio was a Christian Brother who dedicated his life to education and helping the poor. He worked in small communities, which shows the design principle of scale — small but meaningful. He lived simply, which reflects the principle of simplicity, like the Nike swoosh — simple but powerful. This matches the Lasallian mission of humility and service. His symbols are the cross and books, showing his faith and love for education. I learned that he was strong, kind and full of faith.”
