LASSCA Conference Focuses on Practical Innovation

The eighth Lasallian Association of Secondary School Chief Administrators (LASSCA) Conference attracted 121 participants to San Antonio, TX from February 26-29 with the theme Transformation through Practical Innovation. Participants included representatives from 41 Lasallian high schools in the United States-Toronto Region (USAT), District and Regional leaders, presenters, exhibitors, spouses and guests.

McNultyRaymond J. McNulty, President of the International Center for Leadership in Education in Rexford, NY, presented one of the three keynote speeches. He challenged the group to seek new and creative approaches to education and not to accept the status quo. Dr. Arturo Chávez, Ph. D, President of Mexican American Catholic College in San Antonio, TX, addressed the group about diversity and making education accessible. Sr. Carol Cimino, SSJ, Ed.D., National Consultant for William H. Sadlier, Inc. in New York, NY and professor at Manhattan College in Riverdale, NY, encouraged the continued and greater emphasis on Lasallian innovation, Catholic values and preparing students with the learning skills needed today.

Participants had opportunities for lively breakfast discussions on topics including being a single chief administrator and how to create financial sustainability. They also attended breakout sessions on Lasallian Brand integration, increasing revenue, liability issues and best practices, and tuition assistance.

During the LASSCA business meeting, the association elected Robert Scott, AFSC, (President of St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute in Buffalo, NY) as the next LASSCA Vice President. Julie Michels, AFSC, (Principal of Totino-Grace High School in Fridley, MN) becomes the Past President, and
Lorcan Barnes (President of Christian Brothers High School in Sacramento, CA) becomes President. Additionally, LASSCA members received an update on the new Regional structure and the role of its Executive Directors, an update on Lasallian brand implementation, and USAT Regional statistics from Dr. Margaret McCarty, the Executive Director of the Regional Council of Lasallian Association for Mission.

With a majority vote from the membership, the Brother Michael Collins Award of Excellence was created. Bro. Michael was serving as President of DeLaSalle High School in Minneapolis, MN when he died in January after a brief illness. The award, which will be given out annually at the LASSCA Conference, will honor Bro. Michael’s legacy and recognize excellence in a Lasallian secondary program exemplifying some of his values, standards and passions.
