Lasallian Research Travel Grants

Lasallian Research Travel Grants help defray research and travel costs for scholars visiting one of the Lasallian archives in North America or the Institute archives in Rome.

Administered by Christian Brothers Conference (CBC), the Lasallian Region of North America (RELAN) has established the Lasallian Research Travel Grants to encourage and support research projects related to the Lasallian charism and mission.

Major subject areas might include the life and legacy of Saint John Baptist de La Salle, or other Brothers or Lasallian Partners; the governance or leadership of the Institute, Regions, Districts or ministries; Lasallian teaching and pedagogy; Lasallian art; the history of the Institute or any portion of it; or other appropriate research focuses that would require visiting an archive.

The archives in RELAN are located on the campuses of Manhattan College in the Bronx, New York; La Salle University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and at Mont La Salle, the headquarters of the District of San Francisco New Orleans, in Napa, California. The Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools archive is located at the Generalate of the Brothers in Rome, Italy.

Eligibility

University faculty, graduate students, doctoral candidates and independent scholars, particularly those who are interested in expanding their research areas into the Lasallian tradition, are encouraged to apply.

Grants are open to the above applicants who are researching a Lasallian topic with the intent of authoring an article, book or other appropriate publication.

Grants are generally limited to support visiting Lasallian archives, but if appropriate, may be extended to the archives of other universities or religious congregations on a limited basis.

Award

Lasallian Research Travel Grants will be up to $2,000 and are intended to cover travel, lodging and other research expenses.

Conditions

Preference is for applicants associated with a higher education institution. Applicants will follow their institution’s research/IRB practices and their institution will serve as their fiscal sponsor.

Please note this is a reimbursable grant. The awardee must expend the funds then request reimbursement. The funds will be reimbursed to the researcher’s institution.

Recipients are expected to acknowledge the grant in any publications that result, in whole or in part, and provide Christian Brothers Conference with copies those publications. Grant recipients will be featured through various CBC communication channels.

If awarded a grant, recipients may be asked to participate in one to two interviews about their project and the results of their research.

Researchers must reside more than 75 miles from the archives they are applying to conduct research at for this grant.

Applicants may receive no more than one RELAN grant in any calendar year. Research and use of the grant funds are generally expected within a calendar year of the grant award. The grant administrator will request occasional status reports.
